SAVE SAAB Action Rallies - 17th January
Copenhagen-Trollhättan
Following an invitation from Hans Christian Thing of the Danish V4 and Sonett Club, I joined him in a convoy (about 30 cars) to Copenhagen on the Saturday, ending up delivering a letter to the U.S. Embassy. We drove on up to Trollhättan the same day before joining in the BIG CONVOY organised by the Swedish Saab Clubs on the Sunday. At least 1500 cars, including many different models – mainly from Sweden, but also from Norway, Finland, Netherlands and Denmark (plus a few folk from the UK!) – met at the Museum and then drove out to the factory.
It was a bitterly cold day in Trollhättan but that didn’t prevent the sharing of really warm feelings for Saab. There was a general air of excitement and anticipation and a sense that we were absolutely right to protest at the decision by GM to close Saab. We were moved by the reactions of factory workers who warmly welcomed our efforts. We saw the new 9-5 and heard about the new 9-3 Cabriolet being built there.
Peter Bäckstrom from the Museum and rally driver Per Eklund were among various speakers who addressed us at the factory to thank us for the support and give an account of the fight to keep the name alive.
There was a more positive mood than I was expecting. We left knowing there was little more we could do but hoping our action had helped by keeping the parties focused and in no doubt about our loyalty. My personal thanks to Breta and Hans Christian for their kindness over the weekend.
Mike Palmer, Chairman, Saab Enthusiasts Club
