SAVE SAAB Action Rallies - 17th January
Duxford
On a typical dull January day a small handful of determined Saab owners set off from Luton, headquarters of SAAB in the UK, to wend their way north-east through the bemused Sunday shoppers of Hitchin and Letchworth to Duxford airfield, home of the Imperial War Museum's historic air museum. Given Saab's aircraft heritage, it was an apt place to fight for the marque's survival.
Here, a constant stream of vehicles soon filled the special car park to capacity with around 100 SAABs of all ages, others being forced to use the general car park. Against the backdrop of iconic airliners, old 92s, Sonetts and classic 900s sat alongside new 9.3s and 9.5s, amidst an atmosphere made up of a mix of pride, anger and determination.
The afternoon culminated in Eric Carlsson giving his thoughts on why SAAB was special and then cutting a massive cake in the shape of a SAAB 92 - which was eagerly devoured by all.
Special thanks for this must be given, above all, to Josephine Gatsonides who galvanised SAAB supporters to get up and do something. Thanks also to Mike Philpott and Richard Elliott from SOC who organised the event and to Peter Briggs and Mike Palmer of the SEC for their involvement. Thanks should also be given to whoever made that cake - it was delicious!
